Family Fun Concert May 15
Children and their parents are invited to join family-friendly performers Mommie and Leah Magner and Friends, local celebrity-hero readers, and families from around the Triangle at Bookmarked! 2011’s first-ever Family Fun Concert, being held Sunday, May 15, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Raleigh’s Fred Fletcher Park, located at 802 Clay St. near Cameron Village.
Part of the Lucy's Book Club public outreach program, Bookmarked! celebrates the special joys of reading with children and features free readings of children’s books and other fun activities for kids and their parents. Other events are taking place at Quail Ridge Books, Marbles Kids Museum, The Green at North Hills, Artsplosure and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. The festival’s featured author is award-winning author/illustrator Molly Bang, who will give several readings on May 14 and a workshop for parents and teachers on May 15.
“Our goal with all Bookmarked! events is to create a welcoming, fun and engaging atmosphere for parents and their children,” explains Chris Marin, member of the Lucy Daniels Center’s board of directors and chair of its Bookmarked! Committee. “We also want to emphasize the Lucy’s Book Club message that reading unlocks all learning. The sooner we read to our children, the sooner they can learn how to express themselves.”
The Family Fun Concert is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $5 per person or $15 per family. Families may purchase refreshments and raffle tickets to win great prize packages—including spa services from Blue Water Spa, a Flip UltraHD Video Camera, a weekend at Harborlight Guest House on Cape Carteret, products from Bookmarked! 2011 presenting sponsor The Body Shop, gift certificates to Varsity Theater, two season passes to Theatre in the Park, a week of camp at Arts Together, and a kids’ gift basket from Learning Express—while they enjoy the music, kids’ activities, and the fun of knowing they’re supporting a good cause. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfortable seating during the event.
In addition to great music, families will enjoy children’s book readings by Ira David Wood III, executive and creative director of Theatre in the Park (and everyone’s favorite Ebenezer Scrooge), and Betsy, star of PBS Kids’ Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures.
In partnership with the Lucy’s Book Club Book Fair being held at Quail Ridge Books on May 14-15 and May 21-22, featured titles from Molly Bang (including LBC favorites All of Me! A Book of Thanks and When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry) will also be available for purchase. Twenty percent of those proceeds will go to support Bookmarked!’s fundraising efforts.
Money raised through Bookmarked! will go toward Lucy’s Book Club and the Lucy Daniels Center’s Family Support Fund, which helps families close the gap between what they can afford to pay for their child’s mental health services at the Center and the actual cost.
